The Newmarket Citizens Band added a silver certificate of merit to its long list of accomplishments during the Canadian Band Association's recent Cavalcade of Winds 1998 event at Harbourfront in Toronto.

The non-competitive adjudicated event drew bands from throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Each group performed two individually chosen pieces - one a Canadian work and one a standard band selection.

Newmarket's Canadian work was a piece entitled "The Peacekeepers March", written by Dan Leeman, whose daughter is a band member.

The standard band piece was an overture by C.M. Von Weber. The band also performed an arrangement of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Music of the Night, in which trumpeter Rick Harper was featured as a soloist.

The band was awarded the silver certificate for its two adjudicated selections. Harper was named best solo performer of the day.

The band will perform at Newmarket's Fairy Lake Park at 7 p.m. this Sunday (July 12).
