1990 – Present
Les began to play cornet at the age of 6. He spent 8 years with the Salvation Army Junior Band in Sheffield, England before moving to their Senior Band at the age of 15. Several years after that Les could be found as the principal cornet with the Chapeltown Silver Band, soon becoming their assistant conductor. The Chapeltown Silver Band became area champions and competed in the national finals of the Wills competition in London. Les changed to the City of Sheffield band where he was assistant principal cornet, later playing e-flat soprano cornet.
The year 1981 was significant for the Newmarket Citizens Band for it was in that year that Les arrived and became principal trumpet. Soon after, Les was serving as assistant conductor during the years Bob Thiel was leading the band. Les’ good-natured guidance has led the band to several first place finishes and gold and platinum standings in the region and nationally.
Dale Matsushige, a native of Montreal, began her musical studies on piano. Dale is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (A.R.C.T.), Concordia University (B.A.) and the University of Toronto (B.Ed.). As a music educator, Dale has devoted her life to teaching, performing and sharing her knowledge and love of music with high school students in both the Richmond Hill and Newmarket areas. Her bands, jazz ensembles and choirs have consistently received Gold and Excellent standards at music festivals both across Ontario and in the United States.
Aside from her teaching career, Dale has spent the last fifteen years as trombonist and Assistant Conductor of the Newmarket Citizens Band, trombonist in the After Hours Big Band and soprano in the York Region Staff Singers. Sundays find Dale in North York at the Toronto Buddhist Church, directing a choir of wonderful senior singers!
